Getting to Yukumiya from Naha Airport

Yukumiya sits in the village of Kami-Unten, in Nakijin, on the northern tip of Okinawa's main island. It is far enough from the resort strip to be genuinely quiet — which also means it is worth planning how you get here. This page covers both options.

By rental car (recommended)

The drive from Naha Airport takes roughly 90 minutes. A rental car makes the whole trip easier: northern Okinawa is spread out, and the places most people come here for — Kouri Island, Nakijin Castle Ruins, Churaumi Aquarium — are all short drives from the house rather than walking distance from each other.

Yukumiya has free parking for two cars on the property, so you do not need to look for paid parking or coordinate with anyone.

If you are deciding whether to rent a car for your Okinawa trip: for a stay in the north, yes. Bus service exists but runs infrequently, and the last departures of the day are earlier than most visitors expect.

By bus: the Yanbaru Express

You can reach us without a car. Take the Yanbaru Express Bus bound for Unten Port (運天港) from Naha Airport. The ride takes about 2 hours 50 minutes.

Get off at Kami-Unten Kominkan (上運天公民館), the crossroads nearest the house. It is a small rural stop, so it helps to tell the driver where you are going when you board — showing the Japanese name on your phone works well.

Please check current departure times on the operator's official timetable before you travel: Yanbaru Express Bus timetable. Schedules change, and there are only a handful of services each day.

Where exactly is Yukumiya?

The house is in a working village, not a tourist development — a quiet lane, neighbours, and a lot of sky. Unten Port is about a 10-minute walk away, which matters if you are catching a ferry to the outer islands of Izena or Iheya. See ferries from Unten Port for how that works.

Mobile signal here can be weak, and there is no television in the house. We mention this on the the house page too, because for most of our guests it turns out to be the point rather than a drawback — but it is worth knowing before you set off.

Once you arrive

• Check-in is from 3:00 PM, check-out is 10:00 AM.
• There is a camera at the entrance, outside only, used to confirm arrival and departure times. There are no cameras inside the house.
• We send a detailed welcome guide before your stay covering the house, the facilities and the local area.

You can shop for food locally: there is a supermarket in the village, and unmanned roadside stalls nearby where farmers leave their produce out with an honesty box. Buying something there and cooking it the same day is one of the better things about staying here — the kitchen is fully equipped, and there is an electric BBQ grill under the eaves.
